Post-Operative Instructions for Botulinum Toxin Treatment (Botox)
These post-injection guidelines help prevent/minimize the possibility of complications such as ptosis (drooping of the eyelids).
AVOID EXERCISE
No straining, heavy lifting, vigorous exercise for at least 3-4 hours, ideally 24 hours following treatment. It takes the botulinum toxin approximately 2 hours to bind itself to the nerve to start its work. We want to avoid increased circulation to that area because this may wash away the botulinum toxin from where it was injected. For this same reason, do not lay down for at least 3-4 hours following treatment.
DO NOT TOUCH INJECTION SITES
Avoid manipulation of injection sites for at least 3-4 hours, ideally 24 hours following treatment (for the same reasons listed above). Avoid touching your face or getting a massage, facial, or micro-dermabrasion after treatment. Fresh, light makeup can be applied gently, but always apply makeup up and away from eyes. Do not apply any pressure towards eyes. This can cause the botulinum toxin to drift to unintended sites, causing drooping of the eyelid.
AVOID HEAT
Avoid heat on the injection sites. After treatment, do not sit in sun, take a warm shower or bath, exercise, or apply heat to the injection areas. Heat causes the botulinum toxin to break down and can reduce effectiveness.
AVOID BLOOD THINNERS
Avoid use of blood thinners (such as Aspirin, NSAIDs, Ibuprofen (Motrin/Aleve/Advil), Vitamin E, Saint John’s Wort). Avoid drinking alcohol for 24 hours after treatment. Blood thinners can increase bruising.
AVOID SKIN IRRITANTS
Only apply clean, fresh makeup during healing time after treatment. Also, discontinue Retin-A use at least 2 days before and after treatment.
DELAYED ONSET
Botulinum toxin takes 2-14 days to take full effect. Please contact our office between 10-14 days following treatment if you are not seeing an effect – you may need additional injections/enhancements. Please do not contact us sooner than 10 days – this is to give the botulinum toxin time to work.
