Post-Operative Instructions for
Dental Fillings/Restorations

Proper brushing and flossing is recommended to help in the healing process and to help you maintain your final restoration for a long, healthy life. It is important that you start your home care as soon as you can.

Sensitivity, especially to cold, is common for a few days following any dental restoration and is usually most noticeable the first 12 to 24 hours after the anesthetic wears off.

It may take a few days to get used to the new restoration. The bite cannot always be adjusted ideally on patients who are numb and this can cause your tooth to be sensitive to cold, hot, pressure, or biting. If you feel that your teeth are still sensitive and your bite feels off after a few days, please call our office for an appointment for a simple adjustment.

Due to the numb feeling from the anesthetic agent, patients can chew the inside of their lips, cheeks, or tongue, causing serious damage. Wait until the anesthetic wears off to eat. Children should be observed closely until the anesthetic wears off.

The injection site may be sore for a few days.

Many restorations go to the gum-line or below the gum-line. Therefore, you may experience some discomfort for a few days due to the gum tissue being irritated from the procedure.

The finished restoration may be contoured slightly different and have a different texture than the original tooth. Your tongue usually magnifies this small difference, but you will become accustomed to this in a few days.
