Post-Operative Instructions for
Scaling and Root Planing (SRP)

Scaling and Root Planing is a more involved procedure than a routine cleaning; however, most patients experience little or no postoperative discomfort. The most frequent symptoms after treatment are tenderness of the gums and cold sensitivity of the teeth.

If anesthetic was used, the injection site may be sore for a few days.

Here are some helpful reminders:

  • Be careful after having anesthetic. Due to the numb feeling from the anesthetic agent, patients can chew the inside of their lips, cheeks, or tongue, causing serious damage. Wait until the anesthetic wears off to eat.

  • Use warm salt water rinses (1 tsp. salt per 1 cup of water) several times per day for up to one week. This is soothing and promotes faster healing.
  • Take an anti‐inflammatory pain reliever. In most cases, ibuprofen (Advil) will be sufficient to control discomfort. We recommend 600mg 4x/day (not to exceed 3200mg in 24 hours). Do not take ibuprofen if you have an allergy, are pregnant, or are taking other medications that interact negatively with ibuprofen.

  • It is imperative that you floss and brush daily. Brushing and flossing daily helps to remove plaque and debris from between your teeth. This is crucial in fighting periodontal disease.

  • Refrain from smoking at least 24‐48 hours to promote healthy healing of gum tissues.

  • Sensitive teeth are very common after treatment and usually resolves in 1‐2 weeks. Avoid ice cold drinks and foods while teeth are sensitive. Brushing two to three times daily with sensitivity toothpaste will reduce cold sensitivity. Extra fluoride can help with sensitivity as well.

We will schedule an appointment in 4‐6 weeks after treatment for a re-evaluation appointment at no charge. Periodontal maintenance cleanings may be recommended every 3‐4 months to monitor your progress and treat periodontal disease. It is critical to come to these appointments consistently to maintain your oral health.
